The Beginning

At the young age of 10, Poojari began his working life as a general help, at a small eatery close to Babulnath Temple, South Mumbai. Poojari’s initial monthly wage was a miniscule four rupees. Shortly after, Poojari was already dreaming bigger and desiring a better role. Hard work pays off, even from the earliest of ages.

Promotion

Two years after he began his working life, Poojari left his role to work as a waiter in the Bombay Port Trust canteen, earning himself six rupees per month. Poojari saw this as his real learning ground. Here he was able to gain the ability to really understand his customers; what they liked and were able to budget for. Coming from a poor background himself, Poojari sympathized profusely.

Hard Work

Poojari proved himself as a hard worker from the beginning and that mentality remained with him long after. Slogging away for almost eighteen hours a day, having to attend night-school to continue his education; Poojari worked hard to ensure he could earn money while educating himself. He developed a love of reading and books, boasting a collection of over one thousand books.

A Fortunate Coincidence

Some years later, Poojari came across an incredible opportunity. Approached by a distant, elderly relative; Poojari was asked to assist him with a juice and snack center near the country’s electronic hub. It was during his time here that Poojari learnt the true meaning of what it is to be an entrepreneur. This same year, he made a go of it for himself.

The Juice Stand

Armed with newfound experience and entrepreneurship but still lacking financial ability, Poojari erected a makeshift juice stand. Using a small wooden table and a manual juice machine, he began to sell various freshly-squeezed juices. Using a tiny hand-written board, Poojari named the stand, ‘Sukh Sagar’, meaning Ocean of Happiness.

Juice Success

With great success, Sukh Sagar became a fully registered brand. It even inspired other Sagars worldwide. It has even celebrated its 50th anniversary recently! Having much of its success coming from middle and lower-middle class customers who appreciated the value for money that Poojari’s juices (and now food) gave them.

A Minor Celebrity

At this point, Poojari had already made quite a name for himself. Poojari frequented with other well known people; film and glamour world personalities, officials, civil and government workers as well as successful industrialists. Famous visitors became famous regulars; Poojari was thrown well into the spotlight.

Transforming Mumbai

As more years passed, Poojari was a living legend in Mumbai. People respected Poojari and associated him with the rise of popular street foods, which were suddenly now considered top class cuisine. Street stand food would now be found in classy hotels. Credit was given where credit was certainly due.

Expansion, Expansion, Expansion

Starting from a tiny wooden table, twenty years later Poojari was the proud owner of twenty ‘Sukh Sagar’ restaurants across India and the Middle East. Additionally, he now had an ice cream factory, a mall as well as a sizeable hotel in Bangalore. All in all, Poojari’s entrepreneurship had managed to find one thousand people jobs. For someone from a background like Poojari’s, this was quite some feat.

International Cuisine

Despite basing itself off of its Mumbai cuisine, the chain had now expanded into numerous different types of cuisine in many different areas around the world. Sukh Sagar restaurants now offered vegetarian food in cuisines such as Chinese, Mexican, Punjabi, Italian to name a few! Poojari was also able to combine his business in various places, offering ice cream as well as other desserts (where suitable).

Bangalore

In Bangalore, Poojari used initiative to expand further. Setting up a four-tiered food court, which included fresh bakeries and escalator services; Poojari brought Bangalore years ahead of it’s time. The popular bread, Paav-Bhaji, was now quite accessible for Bangalore residents, as well as Poojari to sell in his restaurants.

Baking Accessibility

When Poojari created the Sukh Sagar chain, there was no suitable baker that could provide the quantity that Poojari’s chain needed. The previously used method, importing bread daily from Mumbai on train was not such a great idea. However, being such a natural problem solver; Poojari set up his own bakery, soon followed by a milk-sourcer to provide for his many milkshakes and ice creams.

Family Time

An established success in the business world, the successful entrepreneur married his wife; and together they have three sons. All three sons are involved in Poojari’s large network, in major capacities. Providing for his family was something important; ensuring they didn’t have to experience the hardship that Poojari himself did.

Competition

Naturally, where there is success, there is competition. Other international giants were aware of Poojari’s success, and therefore set up their own fast food eateries across India. Poojari was not worried however. His shops were still packed at the least likely of times, he believed the market was large enough for every business to thrive.

More Expansion?

Despite his continental success, Poojari dreamed even more. Why stop at India and the Middle East? The whole world should be able to eat Sukh Sagar food. To this day, Poojari is in the process of opening additional stores in Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi but also internationally, in countries such as Canada and the US.

Giving Back

From his beginning, earning a mere four rupees a month, Poojari is more than aware of how poverty can affect someone. In this respect, Poojari is giving back to the community, to ensure kids are educated and given the fair chance that he was not quite given. Children need to be in school, educating themselves at such important ages, not working long shifts.

Implementation of Community Initiatives

How did Poojari give back to the community? Poojari used his wealth to construct a free community hall in his home village. He implemented various measures and programmes to ensure that children get the educational help they deserve. Additionally, he helps those in need with medical payments, paid leave and even will give starter money to staff members attempting to start their own businesses.

George Fernandes

Poojari became the acquaintance of an important man, George Fernandes, during the earlier years of Sukh Sagar. Fernandes discovered the rich, beautiful taste of paav-bhaji at Poojari’s first restaurant at the end of a long day of endless taxis. With great fatigue, his day turned a corner upon visiting Poojari’s restaurant.

Special Connections

Fernandes was the beginning of the creation of an important network for Poojari. Trade Unionist leader, Fernandes, loved the food served at Poojari’s restaurant. Even when he became a major player in national politics; the defence minister remained a frequent visitor, and friend, of Poojari.
